WIELRENTOERNOOI ONTSPANNEN EN GEZELLIG<br><i>CYCLING TOURNAMENT FUN AND RELAXED</i>

Het is even pauze, na de vijfhonderd meter tijdrit. Veel bezoekers en veel camera’s staan bij de tribune in het drassige gras tegenover het erepodium. De plek waar vijf minuten eerder nog lachende en juichende wielrenners stonden, is nu weer leeg. Ook het publiek is weg, ouders zijn naar hun kinderen, anderen drinken even iets in de kantine.Aan de andere kant van het sportpark zie je door een smalle doorkijk in de struiken de start van de kilometer-tijdrit. Coaches en scheidsrechters zetten de renners op een rij, in de startvolgorde. Coaches geven de laatste aanwijzingen aan hun renners, en dan is het fietsen. Een kilometer lang. Bij het uitkomen van de laatste bocht klinkt luid gejuich van andere renners en publiek, en dan moe maar voldaan de finishlijn te passeren. Het sfeertje is ontspannen en gezellig.Langs de baan staan een vrijwilliger en de Belgische renner Bas Boonstoppel. Bas vermaakt zich dan ook prima. “De wielerbaan is de leukste plek van de hele Spelen. Ik hoef pas vanmiddag te rijden, de tien kilometer, maar ik vermaak me prima.”CYCLING TOURNAMENT FUN AND RELAXED

“We’ll continue at kwart for one!” Announcer Harry Snuk is still having a bit of trouble with his foreign languages at the cycling matches in Corpus den Hoorn. But he sure is cheerful, Snuk is having the best of times, he tells an acquaintance, with a smile on his face.There’s a short break after the 500-meter time trial. A lot of spectators and camera’s are gathered near the stands on the soggy field next to the rostrum. The spot where five minutes earlier there were laughing and cheering cyclist is now empty again. The crowd is gone, too. Parents went to see their children, others are having a drink in the canteen.
I f you look through a peek hole in the bushes on the other side of the sports park you can see the start of the 1000-meter time trial. Coaches and referees are lining up the riders in starting position. The coaches are giving their last advises to their pupils, and then off they go! Going for one kilometer, at the last turn there is loud cheering from the audience and the other riders, and then passing the finish line tired, but satisfied. The atmosphere is heartwarming and relaxed.
Next to the track we find a volunteer and the Belgian cyclist Bas Boonstoppel. Bas is having a great time. “The cycling track is the most entertaining spot of the entire Games. I don’t have to ride till the afternoon, I’m in the 10 kilometer race, but I’m having a great time.” (translation by René van der Hoofd)
