Wanneer de sporters in het zwembad komen, klapt het publiek enthousiast op de muziek mee. Zichtbaar genietend loopt de Groninger sportwethouder Henk Pijlman voorop, gevolgd door de winnaars en drie kinderen met medaillekussentjes. “Tijdens de Pre Games waren er maar vijf kinderen die de kussentjes droegen. Die waren aan het eind van de dag bekaf”, vertelt een lifeguard.
Dat de lifeguards hun werk goed willen regelen blijkt wel als een zwemmer doorgaat na zijn valse start. Lifeguard Ronald Wortelboer bedenkt zich niet en duikt erin om hem tegen te houden.Wednesday morning, the athletes were welcomed with in an original way. The sport councilor of Groningen,Henk Pijlman, lead the procession followed by three children carrying the medals. “During the Pre Games there were only five children carrying the medals, and they were exhausted by the end of the day” mentioned a lifeguard.It is obvious that the lifeguards were doing their best, as a swimmer kept going after a false start.
